The European Union has a duty to host children who have been injured or traumatized by the war in Gaza, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias said on Thursday.
Dendias made the remarks during a joint press conference with his Palestinian counterpart Riyad al-Maliki in Athens.
"We have a duty to welcome these children, to offer them medical care, psychological support, and education," Dendias said. "It is our moral obligation to help those who are suffering the most." Al-Maliki thanked Dendias for his support and said that the Palestinian people appreciate the EU's efforts to help them.
"We are grateful for the support of the European Union and its member states," al-Maliki said. "We hope that the EU will continue to stand by us as we work to build a better future for our children."
The war in Gaza has had a devastating impact on children. According to the United Nations, more than 500 children have been killed and over 3,000 have been injured in the conflict. Many of these children have suffered serious physical and psychological injuries that will require long-term care.
The EU has a long history of providing humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian people. In 2021, the EU provided over €300 million in humanitarian aid to the Palestinian Territories. This aid has helped to provide food, shelter, medical care, and education to those who have been affected by the conflict.
The EU's commitment to the Palestinian people is unwavering. The EU will continue to provide humanitarian assistance to those who need it most and will continue to work towards a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.
